I’d been in a shitty mood ever since the call with my father. Everything changed the minute I stormed into the building lobby. My eyes gravitated straight to Jrue, who was standing barefoot on a two-story extension ladder with a paintbrush in her hands. I couldn’t help but notice her physique from behind. She had a set of slim legs that I could see wrapped around my waist and an ass I wouldn’t mind pulling up behind. My dick hardened to stone in my slacks at the thought. Her heels laid against the tarp spread out underneath the ladder as she reached up, extending her arm to the ceiling. The ladder wobbled, and my heart thudded in my chest as I rushed over to stabilize it.

I called out to her with concern laced in my voice. “Yo, be careful. What the hell are you doin’ up there anyway?”

She snapped her neck down and then focused her attention on the wall. “This isn’t my first time on a ladder, Kas. I’m okay.”

“What are you doing up there?”

“If you want something done right, sometimes you have to do it yourself,” she replied.

I watched her reach up, extending her arm again, but still unable to reach the spot she was trying to get, making me chuckle. “You’re a bit of a control freak, huh?”

She lowered her arm before turning to face me. “I prefer perfectionist,” she stated while batting her lengthy, black lashes.

I laughed again. “I bet you would. Here, get down and let me help,” I offered.

Jrue rolled her brown eyes to the ceiling before inching down the ladder. “I’m only giving this to you because you’re taller than me,” she stated before extending the brush to me.

I slid off my blazer just as my cell vibrated in my pocket. I pulled it out to see my father’s name across the screen before pressing ignore. I took Jrue’s place on the ladder, painting the spot she’d been trying to get.

“How’s it lookin’ from down there?” I asked her.

“Looks good. Real good,” she replied.

I slowly retracted the ladder before placing the brush in the drip pan. A compelling feeling of curiosity washed over me as I stepped to her. “What’s really good with you?” I asked.

“What do you mean?”

“What’s your story? I mean, I remember some shit from the club when we first met, but…”

“But what?”

“I can’t lie. You got me a lil curious.”

“About me?”

“Yeah.”

“Why?”

I shot her a lazy shrug. “I wish I knew.”

“What all do you remember from the club?” she inquired, licking her cupid’s bow.

The way the tip of her tongue grazed the top of her lips instantly drew my attention to them. “Damn…”

“What?”

My neck fluttered side to side, trying to stop my mind from derailing. “Nothin’, um, let’s see. You’re a Philly jawn, born and bred. And you’re… twenty-five?”

She nodded. “Yup, and yup. I’ll be twenty-six on Halloween.”

“You’re a Scorpio?”

“Yeah. You got a problem with that?”

“The contrary. My birthday is two days after yours.”

“Ayyyeee! Scorpio gang!” she cheered.

“The best to ever do it,” I added.
